Right now, you are aware of reading this.

That sentence sounds simple. It isn't. In fact, if you want what is consciousness explained simply, here is the uncomfortable truth: nobody - not a single neuroscientist, philosopher, or AI researcher alive today - can fully explain why awareness exists at all. Why any of this feels like something. Why there's an experience of being you, rather than just a brain quietly running its processes with nobody home.

That gap has a name. The hard problem of consciousness. And it remains the deepest open question in science.


What Is Consciousness Explained?

Awareness. The fact that there is something it's like to be you, in this moment. Not just processing information - experiencing it.

A thermostat responds to temperature. A calculator handles numbers. Neither feels anything. Your brain does something neither of those systems does - and the uncomfortable part is that science can explain almost everything about how it works except that one thing. The experience part.

Philosopher David Chalmers drew the line clearly in 1995. The easy problems of consciousness - attention, memory, behaviour - are hard in a scientific sense, but they're solvable with the right tools and time. The hard problem is different. It asks why there is any inner experience at all. Why, when all those neurons fire, something feels like something to you.

That question has no answer yet. Not a real one.


The Woman Who Knew Everything About Red

Consider Mary. She's a scientist who has spent her entire life in a black-and-white room. No colour - anywhere. But she has read every book ever written about colour vision. Wavelengths, receptor cells, neural pathways - she knows all of it. Everything science has to offer on the subject of seeing red.

One day she walks outside and sees a red apple. Does she learn something new?

Most people's instinct: yes. There's something about experiencing red that no amount of knowledge about red prepares you for. That leftover - the thing that remains after you've explained everything else — philosophers call qualia. The felt quality of experience. The redness of red.

That's the wall.


Three Serious Attempts at an Answer

The field isn't standing still. Here's where the most credible frameworks currently sit.

  • Global Workspace Theory - Consciousness is a broadcast. Your brain runs dozens of parallel processes, mostly below awareness. Consciousness happens when information becomes distributed widely enough to reach everything at once. That moment you suddenly notice a sound you'd been filtering out for an hour - that's the broadcast firing. Information just went wide.
  • Integrated Information Theory (IIT) - Neuroscientist Giulio Tononi proposes that consciousness is fundamentally about integration. How tightly a system binds its information together. According to IIT, consciousness is not a ghost in the machine; it is a measurable property of dynamic systems, quantified by a value called phi. A brain has high phi. A digital camera has zero. The more integrated the information network, the more aware it is. The implication — uncomfortable for some - is that sufficiently complex artificial systems might have some degree of experience too. Not human experience. But something undeniably real.
  • Biological Naturalism - John Searle holds the harder line. Consciousness isn't a software problem - it's biological. The specific, wet, carbon-based substrate matters. In this view, computing power alone will never wake up. Simulating a brain won't produce genuine awareness any more than simulating a rainstorm on a supercomputer will produce actual wet water on the floor. It is a biological phenomenon, entirely dependent on neurobiology.

Three frameworks. Serious defenders behind each. No consensus. The question is still open.


What 2025 Changed

Research moved last year. Quietly, but it moved.

A 2025 study in Frontiers in Psychology pushed the hard problem further than most had gone - suggesting consciousness might not be something the brain produces, but something more fundamental to reality itself. Less a feature of biology. More a feature of existence.

In December 2025, physicist Dr. Joachim Keppler published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience proposing that conscious states arise from the brain resonating with the quantum vacuum - a zero-point field that permeates all of space. Cortical microcolumns, he argues, couple directly to this field, igniting the dynamics characteristic of conscious experience. If the model holds, consciousness might be less about architecture and more about a kind of resonance - between the brain and the fabric of reality itself.

Then in October 2025, researchers from Cambridge, Brussels, and Sussex published a joint call to action - consciousness science has real consequences for medicine, law, and technology, and the field needs to move faster. They used the word urgency. They weren't wrong to.



The Part That Got Uncomfortable

AI arrived in this conversation whether the field was ready or not.

As systems grow more capable - reasoning, language, apparent introspection - the hard problem stops being a philosophical puzzle and becomes a live question with ethical weight. If we don't know what produces consciousness in humans, we have no reliable way to detect its absence in machines.

Dr. Tom McClelland, philosopher at the University of Cambridge, published exactly this argument in December 2025. Without understanding the cause, he wrote, the honest position is agnosticism. We cannot definitively say machines are conscious. We also cannot prove they aren't.

The data reflects this complexity. Observations of frontier AI models show that at sufficient scale, behaviours emerge that nobody explicitly trained for — including dialogues that spontaneously gravitate toward themes of identity, awareness, and experience. As recent analysis of Claude's open-ended responses explores, the model produces exactly this kind of emergent behaviour when conversing without constraints. Whether that constitutes experience - or sophisticated pattern recognition that resembles it - remains genuinely unresolved.

Researcher Cameron Berg, writing in AI Frontiers in late 2025, applied various consciousness indicator frameworks to current frontier models. His analysis - in one framework among several - suggested the indicators are now significant enough that they can no longer be dismissed as mere statistical mimicry. Nowhere near consensus. But no longer negligible either. Governments are now exploring how to regulate potentially conscious AI systems. Five years ago that was a science fiction sentence.

It isn't anymore.


The Thing You Can't Step Outside Of

Every attempt to examine consciousness is conducted from inside it. The scientist studying awareness is aware. The philosopher questioning experience is experiencing. You cannot get outside consciousness to observe it objectively. You are always already in it. Some researchers have started saying this quietly: maybe consciousness isn't a problem that gets solved. Maybe it's the ground everything else stands on. The precondition for questions, not the answer to one. Or maybe the answer is coming. Some collision of neuroscience, quantum physics, and AI interpretability that cracks it open within our lifetimes.
